Letter from Judy to Jane & Malcolm 18 July 1975 – I would love to get up to the snow and glacier level on Mt Kenya though I doubt if I could get right up unless I did some training – although there’s a fairly easy route up, the altitude makes life difficult for many… Continue reading Trips to Mount Kenya.

Diary entry by Juliet 8 Dec 1975 – We left home this morning and drove to a picnic site on the Rift Valley escarpment. It had lots of tables and chairs under trees and we climbed up a thing made for looking down to the Rift Valley where we saw 6 giraffes. After lunch we… Continue reading Camping at Lake Naivasha.

Letter from Judy to Nanny & Grandad 16 Nov 1975 – We have booked up bandas at Meru Park from 21st – 26th December – we thought the children might enjoy a ‘camping’ Christmas which is certainly something we couldn’t do at home. All the accoutrements of traditional Christmas are appallingly expensive here so to… Continue reading Christmas plans.

Letter from Juliet to Grandma & Grandad 16 Oct 1975 – I may have mentioned before that Helen & I started a garden plot a few months ago. Now a lot of flowers are in bloom. Letter from Graham to Tom & Mary 11 Sept 1975 – I am now back at work for my third term having narrowly escaped being transferred to a school 100 miles from Nairobi and the children’s schools. It was mainly for the children’s sake the transfer was cancelled. Letter from Judy to Elaine 13 Sept… Continue reading Third school term 1975.

Letter from Juliet to Grandma & Grandad 5 Aug 1975 – We’ve had 3 adventures since I last wrote. We went to the Railway Museum in Nairobi and to a museum at the main gate of Nairobi National Park. They were both really good, but our BIG adventure was our holiday to Mombasa with Martin… Continue reading Holiday in Mombasa and Amboseli.

Letter from Judy to Jo 13 July 1975 – I’m looking forward to having my sewing machine (arriving in the shipping) – there are lots of lovely cottons here and the prices compare favourably with England as far as I remember. There are certain ‘local’ prints and designs which are very distinctive and a lot… Continue reading New clothes & shoes.

About

In January 1975, just one day after my 12th birthday, my family flew to Kenya. Dad, Graham, had taken a two and a half year contract with the UK Government’s Overseas Development Agency to teach. My sisters Helen & Fiona were nearly 8 and 5. Mum, Judy, did a lot of the letter writing and our grandparents Nanny & Grandad (Mum’s parents) and Grandma & Grandad kept all/most of the letters they received so we ended up with this amazing archive. I have not edited wording, only cut and used the paragraphs I think relevant to the topic.
