Shopping in Nairobi.

Diary entry by Juliet 4 April 1975 –

Today we went into Nairobi to do some shopping. First we went to the Text Book Shop and us children bought a book each. I bought ‘Living Free’ by Joy Adamson, a sequel to ‘Born Free’ which I have seen as a film. We bought lots of other things and Mummy bought me some curtain material. It is cotton with a green, blue, purple and orange line pattern. Mummy also bought a table cloth. We went to the Coffee House and had dinner and met Daddy there.

Diary entry by Juliet 5 Jan 1977 –

Today we went shopping in Nairobi. From Kikuyu to Nairobi takes about half an hour to drive and is about 15 miles. The centre of Nairobi is nothing like the centre of Bristol as there are no huge shops like C&A or Littlewoods. There is a Woolworths and a K&A but they are both only one floor. In the centre there is the market in a building with galleries around the edge on the inside of the first floor. These are where the carvings are sold and the ground floor is where the fruit and veg are sold. Next to this is the meat and fish market. We had lunch at an Indian restaurant called The Elite. Mum & Dad had a curry but we had fish and chips ! We looked in at Wanyee Bookshop and the Catholic Bookshop so we could buy our school text books. At the Catholic Bookshop I met my school friend Angela Ball with her Mum and sister. We got some books out of the Macmillan Memorial Library on Banda St. In most parts of Nairobi there are beggars; some that are crippled and some with elephantiasis. Most of them are dirty and look poor but Ruth, Carol and Gathoni’s Dad Chris has witnessed a man known as a beggar come into a garage in posh clothes and buy a car with ready cash !
