Letter from Judy to Nanny & Grandad 20 Nov 1976 –
A few weeks ago we went to Naivasha again and while Graham and I did some climbing Juliet went horse riding with some friends. By some unlucky chance a bird flew out underneath her horse’s nose squawking loudly with the result that the horse bolted and Juliet landed ignominiously on the ground. She was lucky and only damaged her wrist, spraining it and chipping a bone. It was touch and go whether it would have healed enough to allow her to do her exams (it was her right hand) but she just made it and it is well on the way to being completely healed by now. It doesn’t seem to have put Juliet off riding at all and as she earns a regular sum by babysitting for our neighbours she is looking forward to doing plenty more. We wished we had our cine camera with us the other day when they were all three riding. Fiona is what the syce at Naivasha calls a ‘natural’ and looks ridiculous sitting up on the enormous horse making it do just what she wants. The others have never persuaded Helen to get on a horse before but she finally gave in and after walking around the grounds with the syce walking beside her holding the horse she decided that nothing disastrous would happen if she went on her own, so they all came over to show us how clever they were !
