Pet mice.

Diary entry by Juliet 24 May 1975 –

I got up late this morning and then just played. I have got two mice called Shandy (she’s the mother) and Bandy (because he or she has a bandy leg). Bandy is brown, very small but not shy. Shandy is a fawny colour with pink eyes. She is quite big and is shy. This morning Daddy got the cage for them he had made up at Kikuyu. It is large and has a wire roof. I got the mice from my schoolfriend Angela Bell.

Thanks for the pic Steph Hillier on Flickr.

My mice are getting on fine and ate their cardboard maze I had made for them.

My mice have had babies which have now grown fur. There are 3 white ones, 3 brown and 2 fawn coloured ones. I gave Alastair my father one as I don’t want any more babies. They are very sweet and I can often hear them squeaking.

The mice are now out of the house in the playroom so we have not got such a smelly house. I am pleased that the mice have been looked after well and various children have had fun watching them grow up and play. A few have been given to other children to keep.

This morning I went to Alex Scholes to get my mice after our holiday. Some of the babies had been eaten but the survivors can now walk and see. Alex Scholes is 11 years old and she and her family have two dogs ‘Girl Friday’ (Gullie Girl) and ‘Tusker’, two ponies ‘Bluebird’ and ‘Taffy’, two tortoises, four fish and several guinea pigs. Her sister Vicky is 9 and Helen Scholes is 7. They go to Greenacres School and board there during the week. Alex and I sometimes feed the rats in the Biology lab at Alliance as her dad is a Biology teacher.

This morning when I was just going to get dressed Juliet came in and said “come and see the mice”. The mice had made sawdust go all round the strawberry carton which was their house and had made one hole. In their box they have a mouse wheel and wood which they can hide under. I like it a lot.
