From Juliet’s diary 2 Feb 1975 –
We went swimming today – the water was quite cold but I enjoyed it. Mum & Dad got in too but Mum only swam two lengths then got out. It is an outdoor swimming pool.

Today we had swimming at school. We all had to be timed to see what races in the gala we could swim in.
Letter from Graham to Grandma & Grandad 8 Feb 1975 –
I went to the school swimming pool and sunbathed. I also swam 20 lengths without stopping. The pool is open for staff only after 3:30pm at weekends so I am better off for swimming than I was in Bristol. Later in the year it gets quite cold so I am making the most of the fine weather.

This afternoon we went swimming. The water was quite cold but I enjoyed myself. Some children put Mum’s skirt and my trousers in a bowl of water so Helen had to go and get us some more clothes from home.
Letter from Judy to Grandma & Grandad 17 Feb 1975 –
The school swimming pool is a few minutes walk away from our house – we go every weekend. I think the wind and cool nights keep the water temperature low. Graham and another member of staff have great plans to build a water heating device using solar heat with some of the boys at school. All the swimmers would be very grateful if it worked ! Helen and Juliet also swim twice a week in their own school pool in Nairobi where it’s warmer.

Letter from Judy to Nanny & Grandad 26 Mar 1975 –
Juliet had her swimming gala at school last week and collected another certificate by being in the winning relay team (teams were by house – Juliet was in Ball). We all went to watch and had an enjoyable afternoon. The nuns provided tea and cakes for us and there was an ice-cream man in situ. The microphone was handled by an enormous African woman with glasses and a deep contralto voice – we were much amused to discover she was the Head Girl ! She certainly exuded authority !

Letter from Helen to Nanny & Grandad May 1975 –
I can swim a length now and we go down to the swimming pool quite often.
